Forest Health & Fuels Mitigation

Riparian & Stream Restoration

Mine Land Reclamation

Landcape-scale projects to create resilient futures

The health of our forests, streams, and watersheds is deeply interconnected. Forests naturally filter water from snowmelt and storms, with trees, soil, and shade retaining moisture and gradually releasing it to sustain wildlife, plants, and communities. However, overstocked, dying, or fire-damaged forests disrupt this balance, leading to erosion, degraded water quality, and reduced resilience across the landscape.

Beyond forest health, watershed restoration also involves addressing the impacts of past mining activities and stream degradation. Abandoned mines can leave behind harmful waste that contaminates rivers and soils, while altered streams can disrupt natural flow patterns, harming aquatic life and increasing flood risks. By restoring streams and reclaiming mine-impacted lands, we help reestablish the natural processes that sustain healthy watersheds.

At ARWC, we tackle these challenges through targeted forestry work, stream restoration, mine reclamation efforts, and more. By thinning forests, removing excess or diseased trees, and opening up the canopy, we create more resilient ecosystems that are better equipped to withstand disease, fire, and erosion. Our stream restoration projects aim to reconnect waterways with their floodplains, improve habitat for aquatic species, and reduce the risk of flooding. Mine reclamation efforts focus on stabilizing soils and minimizing future contamination following fires.

Together, these efforts ensure that our watersheds can continue to provide clean water, healthy habitats, and beautiful landscapes for generations to come.

Forest Health & Fuels Mitigation

We recognize that healthy forests are essential to the vitality of our watersheds and our communities. ARWC champions forest health and fuels mitigation projects designed to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires while promoting resilient forest that can thrive for generations to come. Through strategic forest management, we not only protect water quality and wildlife habitat but also safeguard the communities that depend on these natural resources. Our work is driven by collaboration with local partners, ensuring that our focus is on high priority landscapes.

At the heart of the Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative’s mission is the restoration and protection of our vital riparian zones and streams. Our Riparian and Stream Restoration projects aim to revitalize waterways that are essential to both ecological balance and community well-being. By restoring streambanks, enhancing aquatic habitats, and improving water quality, we work to ensure that our rivers and streams can support thriving ecosystems and resilient communities. Through innovative practices and partnerships with local stakeholders, we are committed to preserving the natural beauty and functionality of our waterways for future generations.

Mine Land Reclamation

The Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative is dedicated to transforming impacted landscapes through our Mine Land Reclamation projects. These efforts focus on restoring areas affected by historical mining activities, bringing new life to environments that have long suffered from degradation. By stabilizing soils, improving water quality, and reintroducing native vegetation, we help to heal these lands and ensure they can once again support healthy ecosystems. Our reclamation work not only benefits wildlife and natural habitats but also reduces the risk of pollutants entering our waterways, contributing to the overall health of the Arkansas Basin. Through collaboration with local communities and partners, we are turning past environmental challenges into opportunities for regeneration and resilience.
